The Sons

Stu from The Sons sent us 4 tracks from their latest E.P. and it's safe to stay they're quality. Here's what I think of them!

Track 01: 'The Tension of Dream Crowds'

Guitar Fade. The track begins in a spiky, punky fashion. Reminds me of early Stone Roses. Stu's vocal kicks in and it's direct and angry. The band come together and from the first few vars you can tell they're a bunch of good musicians. The track has it's own identity and sounds different to a lot of the stuff out there. The tempo changes from time to time and mini middle 8's are employed in a variety of places. Indie, Punk and even hints of Garage fill this track. Great opener! Get on it!

Track 02: 'Hinterland'

As soon as this tune starts you think, The Cure. Very 80's Indie and New Wavey this one. With a driving guitar solo beginning the song you get the feeling this has taken a lot of time to record. Great craftsmanship! I can here hints of Squeeze here too it's not your average Indie track that's for sure! A section of synth sits in the middle before the tune fires up again! Hinterland is complex and catchy. There's a point where Stu says 'Make things work' which is reminiscent of Weller in the song 'Green' All the instruments involved play their parts perfectly and a middle 8 at the end of the track brings things to a close. Superb!

Track 03: 'Down By The U-V Lights'

A dark bass line begins this one. Then straight into action... Bouncy Indie guitar, biting lyrics and a driving beat carry this track along. Short, sharp verses are rattled through with pace accompanied by dirty, distorted guitar. This track reminds me of 'Down In The Tubestation At Midnight' by The Jam at times. Many guitar effects are deployed by the band here and this gives the song a great overall sound. The bass line is  constant throughout and is instantly reconisable after a few listens. An all round good Indie guitar tune!

Track 04: 'Accomplices'

Strong guitar opens the song. Reminds me of the Cords. Stu's vocals then kick in, clear and fluent as ever. The whole band seem really together in this one and the tune gathers its own momentum. It's a proper foot-tapper of a song. You can imagine a whole room of footy lads really digging this one. Around 3/4 of the way in a middle 8 is used and this changes the behavior of the song immediately. The song ends with perfect harmonies reminding me of The Jam's 'Boy About Town'. Excellent!
