I've known Tonic Menswear Head Honcho Phil Bickley for over a decade now and not only is he an absolute diamond of a bloke but he's also incredibly sussed and passionate about what he's does. Tonic has been a cornerstone in menswear on Portobello Rd for soul stylists and discerning gentlemen since the year 2000 and has continued to evolve, adapt and progress with every day that passes. Tonic has always housed some much loved favourites for those in the know, from Baracuta to Vetra and many brands in between. It's always been one of those shops that is beautifully and carefully curated and you can see the level of thought and love that has gone into everything Phil and the team do. It came as no great surprise to me when Phil told me that he would be launching his own Tonic in house brand, his own line taking inspiration from the brands, looks, cuts, materials and fits he loves. Phil has always been immaculately put together and when he told me this news I was very excited at what was to come. Many of you will remember back in the heady days of 2014 when himself and Paul created Real Stars Are Rare so its no surprise that Phil is ready to set sail again this time with his own brand. He very kindly sent me a pair of the "Labroke" Jeans in Raw Indigo Denim so here's my two penneth on these boss trews...
The first thing that strikes you about the Ladbroke is the quality, they're top drawer and not like the standard denim you find on the highstreet. They're made from 14oz denim which has a great weight to it and yet feels breathable when on. The Ladbroke come with all the trad features you'd expect from a high quality jean, the straight leg with a mid rise coupled with a zip fly and a cool indigo finish. They're a solid, modern, smart jean that look fucking great when on. These are a jean that transcend the smart-casual boundary, a jean that can be worn to the boozer during the day and then won't look out of place at a night do on the evening. Smart, simple and functional like all modern-day clothing should be. You can see how much the Tonic brand has thought about every detail here, right down to the name patch on the rear of the belt and the precise stitching which holds the jeans together. For me, the fit on a pair of jeans is 90% of the issue of whether I'll wear them or not and the Ladbroke had me from the first wear. They create a great silhouette down the leg and look great with just about every different profile of shoe imaginable. I've worn these with Clarks Originals, Yogi, Bass Weejuns and even Adidas Stan Smith and they look bang on, every time. Like a good pair of shoes, the Ladbroke wear in with time and look boss, they're a jean that will stay in your wardrobe for a very long time and a pair that you'll constantly return to.
Getting your denim right is an essential ingredient for any new brand and Tonic have hit the ground running with these. The rest of the jeans they've put out look bang on the money too so are definitely worth a closer inspection. I for one, am excited at where the brand will go next, and know that it's in very safe hands with an old pro like Phil at the wheel!
