The Rising: 'Free My Soul Tonight/If You Get With Me'

Southampton based Sixties Rock n Roll band The Rising are onto big things, with a debut album released and now signing to Detour Records the lads are looking to shake things up in the world of X-Factor worshiping fools. Their first single on Detour is called, 'Free My Soul Tonight' and believe me it's a cracker! I had a listen and here's what I thought...

Free My Soul Tonight:
When opening with an smooth few bars of Hammond Organ you know it's going to be a good tune. The guitars then kick in with pure aggression and begin to fire the song into action. The lead then plays a small solo with lovely flicks and licks enough to make even Weller turn his head. The tension builds and everything comes together to create a sixties broth of pure soul. Tommy is a great vocalist and drives the song along with his message. The band are clearly very tight and musically in sync with one another and this shows throughout this tune. "Trying to pound the street, with weights tied to your feet is looking like a waste of time!" is one of my favourite lyrics from the song. Look further into it then what it says, I feel it describes the everyday struggles people go through and how they just seem pointless! Quality! The song flows effortlessly and really does grab your ears attention. It's as much rock n roll as it is soul and is a breath of fresh air to the constant drivel played by Radio 1. "I'm gonna free my soul tonight!" speaks a important truth and highlights how the band are aiming for much higher skies than the world they are living in! "The suits keep lying, the TV keeps trying" another truthful lyric reminding us of the corporate bodies trying to brainwash the masses with their ideologies of what 'good music' is! The Rising are set for a huge future if they keep churning songs out of this quality! Like many of the new bands I'm hearing today The Rising really believe in what they're doing and this speaks volumes! Top tune, well played lads! 'Free My Soul Tonight' is a must have for your collection and is one of my favourite tracks of the year so far! Plus with a video adorned with scooters and sharp clobber it really is the full package.

If You Get With Me:
Beginning with some divine Hammond Organ once again sets the song off to a superb start. A guitar riff then comes into play, it reminds me of Surf Rock and the likes of Little Barrie, a really cool sound. This tune is certainly on the borderline of both a fifties and sixties sound and comes together nicely in one song. 'If You Get With Me' is the perfect companion to 'Free My Soul Tonight' and really pushes this out there as a single! A modern love song in its own right, this tune grabs you attention from the start and really connects with you after a few listens. The musicians here have done a great job and sound very together and you can tell they enjoyed recording this track. As for harmonies these lads know what they are talking about; no problems there. Tommy's vocals are once again on the dot and are as sharp as ever. Both songs are as good as one another and really come together as a package and make a great partnership for this double A side. The Rising are a band to be checked, get on board!
