The Sherpas - Everybody Freeze, Everybody Get Down - EP

It's not very often that you discover a band and they blow you away instantly. Well for me The Sherpas did just that, there's been much said about the current state of British Guitar Music in recent years and with this band on the rise I can only believe that the future is bright. Combining Funk with Indie can only be a good thing and The Sherpas get the balance spot on! When I first heard the EP in its entirety I described their sound as Nile Rodgers meets the Kooks in a futuristic guitar blend of Funk and Indie. This sums The Sherpas up, they are defying the odds in terms of what's possible with British Guitar music. Their sound is unique, fresh and inspiring and their latest EP 'Everybody Freeze, Everybody Get Down' is divine, it brings joy to your ears, trust me! So without further a do it is my pleasure to give the EP a track  by track review.

Track 01: 'Wilderness'

A spiraling funk packed guitar riff opens the tune with smooth fresh bass accompanying it. Cutting vocals kick in and 'Wilderness' finds it feet. The chorus with the word 'Wilderness' being repeated several times gives the track it's own identity. Far superior to your standard run of the mill guitar tune, the type that Radio One would no doubt rave about! The melodies throughout this tune give it that dancey sound which would make it a perfect track to be played in the pubs and clubs of our great land! 'Wilderness' is epic and is just the tip of the Iceberg as to what The Sherpas are capable of! The intricate guitar riffs are something to be in awe of and this one just gets better and better every time you hear it!

Track 02: 'E F E G D'

One minute and seventeen seconds of pure guitar bliss. It hits you immediately, one of the best instrumental tracks I've heard all year, it's up there with The Style Councils 'Micks Up' simply stunning stuff from The Sherpas. The Bass compliments the guitars and the sound flows effortlessly. You could see Nile Rodgers trying to figure this out on his guitar! This track is very reminiscent of early Jamiroquai circa 92! All in all an excellent song which propels the EP into its third track.

Track 03: 'Syllables'

Track three on this pearler of an EP. It flows directly from 'E F E G D' which gives it a flawless playlist type effect. One of the more mellow songs on the EP 'Syllables' gives off a calm indie vibe, the type of tune which bands usually chuck in the middle of a set to chill the crowd out. A perfect tune for a gathering or house party, one which people will automatically ask 'who's that?' Great vocals, smooth guitar and a constant drum beat, lovely stuff from the boys!

Track 04: 'Pryamids'

Great song! Really cool sound with this one, taking the mellow effect from 'Syllables' and carrying it on, adding more smooth guitar riffs and drum fills. It captures the modern Indie guitar sound but has its own intensity and unique vibe too. A great track and one I will certainly stick in one of my future DJ sets.

Track 05: 'Lillian'

Lillian picks up the pace of this fine EP again and really drives it home. Cool drum fills at the beginning with a cutting Indie esque guitar riff over the top set the scene. The vocal here is sublime and gives it that summer party tune vibe. "With tobacco stains in the private eye" Cool! 'Lillian' is what every guy/girl in a band wants their songs to sound like. Fresh, modern and unique. Get listening!

Track 06: 'Zero'

Love this one, a perfect end to a great EP! Mellow Indie Funk with 90's jangly guitar, what a tune! The one really shows the bands potential to have many different sounds, the guitar playing here is stunning and really compliments their funk side. The way 'Zero' is repeated and sang in a choral effect is great, the middle 8 here is a pleasure to listen to, reminiscent of CAST or the LA's. All in all another good track!

What a great EP release from The Sherpas! Get yours on iTunes now!
