Billy Sullivan "Winter Of Discontent" a Review...

Tuesday 8 December 2015

The Spitfires live at 229 London: 11/12/15

The Spitfires a band who have created a real stir on the scene in the last few years. Being good mates of the lads it's great to see how far they have come in such a short space of time.

2012 came and so did a new line up. The Spits were now a three piece consisting of Billy Sullivan, Matt Johnson and Sam Long. Three musicians destined to be together to create proper music. They're all good mates and get on like a house on fire, so there's no wonder they are creating some of the best youth modernist pop around at the moment. Add keyboard player Chris Chanell and Trumpet player Jamie Andre to the mix and you've got a proper wall of sound!

With four decade defining singles along with a perfectly polished, yet raw debut album, The Spits are gaining momentum and very quickly. Supporting the likes of From the Jam, The Specials and even Paul Weller they are getting noticed with all the right people.

I'm often asked by people, "Who are the main new bands you are listening to?" Every time I answer that question I will start with The Spitfires, as they define Modernism for me and have given me and many others that long overdue band that are creating a working class buzz rather than just music.

Billy's song writing is constantly going from strength to strength and the band now with even more sound added, create a colossal noise! They're a force to be reckoned with and are a band who keep gaining new followers by the minute. All I ever hear about the Spits is positive remarks from many old and young. They're a band who wear their hearts on their sleeves and would not be the type who would sell their souls for stardom like so many others have done. Every live performance is met by a bombardment of photos and videos on the social medias and you get the impression that the lads are so much more than a band. They're a movement.

With lyrics dripping with social realism and guitar playing with the aggression of 77 the Spitfires have put a permanent stamp on 2015. I can only see the Spits playing bigger and better venues in the future so you really have to be down the front for this one. 229 is their biggest UK headline show to date and is sure to sell out. It's also the bands last gig of 2015 so it's one you really need to get to!

Not many bands come along who you instantly connect with and I wish the mainstream could see just how good these chaps are! So many shit bands get mainstream radio play who in my opinion don't really deserve it! So get yourselves along to 229 this Friday to see one of England's greatest Modernist talents! Long live the Spitfires, a band who are providing the sussed with hope and melodic ecstasy in 2015 and beyond!
